Are you one of the 85% of people working in a job that you don’t like (maybe even hate) and would rather not be doing?
If your answer is yes, then I have another question for you.
WHY? Why are you still doing something that makes you unhappy and miserable?
The answer to that probably lies somewhere between, I don’t know what else to do, this is all I’ve ever done, and/or, I don’t know how to change the situation I’m in. In other words, you feel stuck and trapped!
So why are you unhappy with your job …and why do you think you keep doing what you’ve always done?
I’d like to share with you what I discovered when I asked myself those very questions.
It’s a fact that about 85% of people are unhappy with their job and don’t know what to do about it. But unfortunately, that’s not the worst part of it.
The worse part is, that this is often having a negative impact on many other parts of their lives as well, that they’re probably not aware of. Most people are completely unaware too, of the impact it’s having on the people around them and their relationships with one another.
That equates to a whole lot of misery and unhappiness!
Everyone is affected differently by this and to varying degrees but some of these negative impacts include…
- A lack of self-worth
- A lack of Self-esteem
- Resentment towards others
- A lack of accomplishment
- A lack of life fulfillment
- A lack of joy
- Jealousy towards others
- Substance (and other) abuse and addiction
- A sense of helplessness
- And one of the biggest …REGRET
And most people, including myself for a long time, just accept these things as “the way it is” or “that’s the way it’s always been” or “that’s life” …well I think “that’s crap!”
For me, life should be something much more than that. It should also be about more than just working to survive, or working just for the money …whatever happened to working with passion, satisfaction, and life fulfillment?
…and yes, I was stuck there too for a long time and I felt many of the above effects over time..
Life should to be much more fun and fulfilling …don’t you think?
I don’t know about you but when I get to the end, I don’t want to have any lingering regrets, especially if I had a chance to change something but I didn’t do it. Even if it doesn’t work out, at least I can say “I gave it my best shot!”
I think it’s sad too when people don’t at least give it a try because they are held back by fear …which usually stems from some of the above conditions like self-doubt, a lack of self-worth or a lack of self-esteem.
I know a lot of people are trying to change their lives and better their circumstances but I think all too often we give up on our dreams and goals as soon as the going gets a little tough (myself included in the past!).
The key here is to make a commitment to yourself and persevere through those tough times anyway.
But don’t beat yourself up too much just yet if you have given-up in the past and found it difficult to get past your own thoughts. We’re not entirely to blame for the way we think and feel, and the way we deal with things in our lives.
…and yes, there is a solution!
The reason we continue to repeat the same things over and over in our lives and why we never seem to be able to get past a certain point …weather it’s in our careers, or in our relationships or even in our earnings capacity…
…is because of our early (childhood) programming.
Every single one of us has been programmed in one way or another. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just the way we learn and grow in early childhood and is inherent to our survival on the planet as Human Beings.
Our parents were the first ones to influence us, particularly in the first three to five years of our lives. Then there were our siblings, teachers, friends and our societies in general, particularly the media.
So, …now you know why you continue to repeat the same things over and over and continually get the same results all the time.
Knowing this is good news …why? …because that means you can now consciously start changing your old programming and begin working on some new programming that will give you better results for your life.
This isn’t going to happen overnight, but to start with, you may need to start questioning things a little more. Start trying to look and think outside the box more often and ask yourself, could there be a better way, another perspective, a different angle of approach etc.
Once you start opening up your mind and perspective a little more things will begin to appear before you that you may never have noticed before.
I have another question for you, if I may.
Do you remember how or why you got into the industry or job you’re in now?
Chances are you’ve changed jobs a few times over the years but are still working in the same industry (perhaps you’re even self-employed in the same industry)
Was it for any of these reasons?
- It was expected of you. You were expected to follow in your parents’ footsteps or take over a family business. Or perhaps it was just expected you would (were pressured to) take a certain career path.
- It’s what you studied for, so rather than waste the education, time, and money already spent, you continued on in that particular field. Again, you would have felt compelled to continue on and it was probably expected of you at that point too. (pressured again!)
- You took whatever job you could after leaving school, particularly if you left school early and didn’t have the best of grades or any other qualifications.
- You took on something you liked at the time thinking you would enjoy forever. It’s easy to think we’ll love something forever, but we never count on boredom and our need to grow and change.
- Or perhaps, you took what you thought was the easiest way of making money at the time.
I left school early and was lucky enough to fall into an apprenticeship. I say lucky because I didn’t have good grades or any other useful skills at the time.
I didn’t like school very much and wanted to leave school mid-year 10. Thankfully my mother (a school teacher) made me finish year 10 first. I couldn’t see the point at the time but I’m very grateful now for her foresight and wisdom.
She also said I had to have a full-time job before I could leave school, and being the stubborn mule that I was back then, I made sure I did.
It was actually through school-based work experience that I discovered that there was something about the kitchen I really enjoyed. So at the age of 16, I took on an apprenticeship as a chef. And I loved it!
I completed my apprenticeship and worked in some of Melbourne’s (Australia) better restaurants before working overseas for several years, mostly in Hong Kong at the highly-awarded M at The Fringe restaurant (which has since closed).
I loved being a chef, the industry, and what I was doing for about 15 years.I then began to question my career choice and the effects it was having on my life.
I loved working with food but I wasn’t enjoying the industry any more …long hours every day on my feet, under pressure, with a fair whack of stress thrown in, wasn’t what I could see myself doing for the rest of my life, and I was only in my early thirties at that stage.
But …I continued to work in the hospitality industry for several more years.
Why? Because that was part of my programming, and I didn’t think I had the skills or knowledge to move into a different career or industry, which was partly because of my own self-worth and self-esteem issues at the time.
Can you see how most of us are taught (programmed) from very early on what’s expected of us? That’s just the way the system seems to work right?
Why is it that we’re all expected to go to school, get good grades, and go to uni (if you’re lucky) to get a “good” – “well paid” – JOB?!
Now, don’t get me wrong, these are great goals and achievements to have and suit some people down to the ground, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all.
But …why is it the only path that’s offered to us in terms of earning money and living a successful and satisfying life? We’re just not taught any other way at school, or by society in general, and I really hope that changes one day soon.
Ask yourself this:
- Is your job secure?
- Are you happy to go to work every day?
- Does your job fulfill your life?
- Is your job or career what you expected it to be?
- Do you still like working for other people?
- Are you happy with what you earn for the hours you work?
- Do you have to work long hours to get your job done?
- Is your job physically and/or mentally tiring?
- Are you left with enough time and energy to enjoy your family and your life?
- Do you have enough money to live your best life?
- Are you tired of being tired?
…then it’s time for a change! It’s time to start thinking outside that familiar box you’ve got so used to!
We now live in an ever-evolving digital world …and we need to change and evolve with it. If we don’t we risk being left behind. Jobs and businesses aren’t what they used to be, and will only continue to change, evolve and adapt over time …and so should we.
Recent events (COVID-19) have only accentuated the need for more diverse ways of doing business, and many people are now realizing that they can quite effectively work from home too. So why do they need to travel into a job every day?
People and businesses have had to adapt rapidly to survive. This crisis has bought forward the inevitable move towards a more digital world forward by at least a couple of years, if not more.
I know these shifts and changes are going to be quite challenging for some and a daunting prospect for others. But if you don’t prepare yourself now, or at least have a secure plan B, then chances are you’re going to be left behind.
I was terrified when I first made the decision to start a digital business. I knew nothing about creating and starting a business online …and I mean nothing …zero! I had no idea where to start either.
But, I knew I had to stop selling my time for money if I ever wanted to live a more fulfilling and prosperous life …not to mention a more financially secure one that wasn’t dependant on me having a JOB!
I was a complete technophobe, to begin with. In fact, I didn’t even understand how my Facebook account worked (no joke).
I had spent most of my life in the kitchen working with food, so I wouldn’t consider myself a techie kind of person at all …and yes, I was a little terrified at first, but I slowly managed to learn the skills I needed to get myself where I am today.
In a relatively short amount of time I managed to change my reality a little …and so can you!
With the right guidance, education, tools, training and support and the right business systems to follow and work with, getting an online business started is relatively easy these days…
…and, I can show you how and where to start …it’s actually where I started, using the same business model and processes.
It won’t happen overnight and I’m not suggesting you should quit your day job just yet either, but with the right attitude, perseverance, and commitment …you will get there.
You really only have to take one step at a time …there is nothing to lose and so much to gain!
Consider the difference more time would make to your life …not to mention an extra income with the possibility of leaving your job one day soon and running your own digital business.
